Fiji Weather

Fiji Weather Satellite Map and Loop

Fiji is located in the tropical band of the South Pacific, so Fiji Weather comprises a tropical maritime climate without extremes in temperature.

Temperature ranges in Fiji are therefore very moderate, with only slight changes from one day to another and from one season to another. The hot summer season falls in January, February and March and generally is not more than about 5 degrees hotter than the cool 'winter' season of July and August and September. The summer season is also the more humid time of the year, so can feel hotter in spite of the minimal temperature degree difference.

Rainfall in Fiji is heaviest during the summer months. For example the wet ' summer ' season is November to April and one can expect a greater number of tropical downpours at this time compared with other months of the year. This is especially true of the larger islands as they generate clouds and precipitation. The smaller outer islands are less affected by this kind of precipitation. The south eastern regions of the main islands such as the Suva area on Viti Levu, receive higher rainfall than the north-western side (such as Nadi on Viti Levu).

The Trade Winds in Fiji come from the south east. These winds are usually light to moderate and bring a cooling influence to Fiji during May to November. The larger islands, such as Viti Levu and Vanua Levu do experience their own local wind patterns due to the larger land masses heating up during the day, and cooling down at night. During the hotter, wetter, summer months of November-April, the winds come from the opposite direction. Fiji's cyclone season is during this period. Major cyclones are not an annual event, but if they occur, they occur during the summer months.
